Visiting Professor / CEO
Shinji Fukuda

Laboratory of Metabologenomics

Professor Shinji Fukuda is a Visiting Professor at the University of Tsukuba’s Faculty of Medicine and Transborder Medical Research Center (TMRC), where he conducts research and development on gut microbiotaba that are intimately linked to human health and disease.

His research focuses on the gut microbiota as an additional organ of the body, comprised of heterogeneous organisms. He aims to understand and regulate its function using his original metabologenomics approach to the intestinal environment. To date, we have shown that metabolic substances produced by the gut microbiota affect various biological functions such as the immune system, metabolic system, renal disease, colon cancer, and intestinal infection.

To translate and apply the results of this research for the benefit of society, Professor Fukuda established Metabologenomics, Inc. His continued research specializes in the regulation of the gut environment and integrative omics science.

Professor Fukuda completed his Doctoral studies at the Graduate School of Agriculture, Meiji University in 2006 and after working as a special researcher at RIKEN, he became a specially appointed Professor at the Institute for Advanced Biosciences in 2019. He was Group Leader of Kanagawa Prefectural Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) from 2013, Visiting Professor to Universiti Teknologija Malaysia (UT-Malaysia) from 2019 and Deputy Director of Research, JST ERATO. He was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2013 and selected as one of the “Outstanding Contributions to Science and Technology 2015” in 2015, by the Institute of Science and Technology Policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

In the same year, he won the highest award at the 1st Bioscience Grand Prix for his business plan “Healthy Society Created from Brown Gems” and established the startup company, Metabologenomics, Inc.

As President and CEO of the company from 2015, he was selected for the “J-Startup,” development support program promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and other public and private sectors, in 2019.

Professor Fukuda is the author of the book “Understanding Better! Gut Microbiota” (Yodosha), among others titles resulting from his research findings.

Professor Fukuda’s research, laboratories and exterise provide a wealth of outcomes and valued research which are being applied to assess disease condition and improve international health and welbeing.
