Description Neoplastic tissue in the brain, bladder and gastrointestinal tract is a target for "Photo dynamic therapy". Although tumor specific porphyrins accumulation is a key phenomenon in this treatment, mechanisms have remained unknown. In 2009, our team found that a membrane transporter, SLC46A1 (Heme Carrier Protein 1), very likely plays an important role in the phenomenon, and we registered it as intellectual property of the University of Tsukuba.
The aim of this research unit is to establish new diagnostic tools and treatment for neoplasms utilizing this discovery.

Description We promote both basic and clinical research for proton therapy and BNCT. By conducting clinical trials for these two particle therapies, BNCT will be upgraded to advanced medical care, and proton therapy will become sophisticated. Description Our research group, Molecular Sportology, has an interdisciplinary organization which consists of instructors from the Faculty of Medicine, those from the Faculty of Health and Sport Science, and outside scientists from a National Institute and a National University. In order to prevent and/or treat obesity and life style-related diseases, the group will conduct a series of translational studies of exercise therapy from bench to bedside. Based on the forthcoming results, we aim to find new evidence regarding the efficacy of exercise therapy.

Description The purpose of our project is to analyze the quality of the health services for sustaining Japan's health and welfare system, and supporting the increasing number of elderly people. We provide both professional information and specific suggestions to policy makers. Our research unit not only studies the organization of the medical care field, we also study it from multidisciplinary viewpoints such as policy, law, economics, sociology, anthropology and so forth. We incorporate effectively the results of these different disciplines in order to achieve better medical services for all people. We also aim to help transmit the success of these disciplines within the country and abroad. With this, we improve the quality of service “achieving medical care in harmony with life”.

Description Stem cell therapy is combined with drug delivery systems and robot technology in this project. DDS is used to control in-vivo development of stem cells and robot technology to support regenerated physical functions. Pharmacokinetics of DDS and development of stem cells are reconfirmed using in-vivo imaging technology. We are finally going to apply the above complex treatment system to human beings.

Description Drug delivery systems (DDS) have been prepared, using nanomicelles, which have the ability to release drugs according to in vivo regional pH. We are developing a treatment system for ulcerative colitis, and atherosclerosis, using these nanomicelles. Also, we are evaluating other nanoparticles which could pass the blood-brain barrier for the treatment of brain diseases, and another one, which could be accumulated by magnetic force. In a few years, we would like to submit these nanoparticles to clinical trials.

Description Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a disease status with poor prognosis, which is caused by multiple etiologies. It is not clarified why PH develops and how we can treat this syndrome.
