"Happy New Year Party 2014"
On January 14, 2014, we held a New Year party for the international students of Medical Sciences.
Approximately 30 international students participated in the party, and enjoyed an Iaido performance (a traditional Japanese martial art), mochitsuki (rice cake pounding), a potluck meal, and a charity auction.

Annual Presentation & Activities Abroad Colloquium was held
2012 The Annual Presentation & Activities in Abroad Colloquium was held on the 8th floor of the Health and Medical Science Innovation Laboratory building on Thursday, February 20, 2013.
The colloquium consisted of Vietnam and Taiwan sections: each of the three Vietnam groups gave presentations on Clinical Research, Experimental Research, and Molecular Biology Teaching; as for Taiwan, the participants in the Summer School 2012 gave presentations. In addition, Ms. Pei-Han, a student in the Dual Master’s Degree Program from National Taiwan University gave a presentation.
This was followed by presentations by students, residents, and young researchers who participated in the Program for Young Researcher Overseas Visits.

Tsukuba Global Science Week
An international conference, Tsukuba Global Science Week, was held in the Tsukuba International Congress Center October 30 through November 2, 2012.
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tsukuba and the School of Integrative and Global Majors (SIGMA) co-hosted this international conference. The Human Biology Symposium was held on October 30 and 31, the 3rd Leading Graduate Schools International Conference and the 7th Tsukuba Medical Science Research Meeting were held on November 1 and 2.
The Faculty of Medicine, host of the 3rd Leading Graduate Schools International Conference and the 7th Tsukuba Medical Science Research Meeting, invited Bordeaux Segalen University, University of Bonn, University of Edinburgh, University of Szeged, and National Taiwan University which participated last year. In addition to that, the Faculty of Medicine invited guest speakers from university of Utah and University of Science HCMC. It lasted two days.
The 3rd Leading Graduate Schools International Conference consisted of four sessions.
Themes were set for each of them; Molecular Biology and Cell Signaling, and Neuroscience for the first day; Molecular Biology and Cell Signaling, and Energy Metabolism for the second day. Also, lectures were given by twelve speakers.
Also, there was a Public Health Session as part of this conference; eight students gave poster presentations in addition to lectures by eight speakers.
There were 51 participants including students from abroad in the 7th Tsukuba Medical Science Research Meeting and they gave poster and oral presentations.

The performance of the Tsugaru Shamisen Club of the University of Tsukuba, Mugenjuku, at the reception on November 1, and the folklore performance at the award ceremony on November 2 enlivened the participants of the conference.
The next year’s conference is already scheduled and will be held for 3 days from October 2.
Summer School 2012
On August 3, 2012, Summer School 2012 ended with a great success after being conducted for 2 weeks.
A total of 28 students participated in this Summer School; 13 students from Vietnam, 12 students from Taiwan, and 3 students from Japan. They split into 20 labs to take lectures and to have training.
This Year Summer School introduced a rotation system, and the students chose a lab per week or a lab for 2 weeks in a row to do research in those labs.
A short trip to Kamakura was scheduled for Saturday, and the students enjoyed the sightseeing accompanied by the host students.
Oral presentations were held over the whole last day of Summer School.
All the students, who received presentation coaching from Brian sensei, gave presentations on the outcome of their Summer School research activity conducted over the past 2 weeks.
A BBQ party was held after the presentations sessions. The participating students and the members of the labs who welcomed them deepened their friendship as they played watermelon bust and other fun activities, which made saying goodbye to each
other all the harder.
To cap it all, prizes were given to the best presenters.

Each student flew home on the 4th of August.
From on August 19, some Japanese students will begin participating in Summer School at National Taiwan University.
Summer School 2012 has started
Summer School 2012 started on July 23rd, 2012. A total of 28 students from Vietnam, Taiwan, and Japan attended the orientation. After Dr.Hisatake gave the welcome speech, Dr.Ho gave an overview of the Summer School, and Brian sensei, of the presentation course. More greeting speeches were given by students who are in charge of managing the Summer School, and the participating students listened attentively to their speeches without showing any fatigue from their long journey.
Summer School will be held over the next 2 weeks. The students are scheduled to do some research at each laboratory and to take lectures from various professors.
Medical trainee from Bordeaux
Pierre Gach from University of Bordeaux II in France is visiting Japan for hospital training.
He plans to stay from June 17 until August 18 to have training at the Gastroenterological Surgery and Anesthesiology, Oral and Maxillogacial Surgery department of University of Tsukuba Hospital.
The second Vietnamese students exchange meeting
The second Vietnamese students exchange meeting was held at the Kasuga Plaza of University of Tsukuba on July 2.
At the presentation session‚ firstly Vice President Yutaka Tsujinaka (person in charge of Global Activities) gave a greeting address.
Secondly‚ President Kyosuke Nagata (Director of the Office of the Advisor to the President‚ Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences) presented a talk about the Globalization of University of Tsukuba.
Subsequently‚ Professor Osamu Ohneda (Director of the University of Tsukuba Ho Chi Minh City Office‚ Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences) made a presentation about Introduction of Vietnamese student network.
After the interval, four Vietnamese student spoke about their college life in University of Tsukuba.

Medical trainee from Pakistan
Ummay Roman Moughal from Dow Medical College in Pakistan is visiting Japan for hospital training.
She plans to stay from June 29 until August 10 to have training at the Gastroenterological Surgery and Cardiovascular Surgery, Breast and Endocrine Surgery department of University of Tsukuba Hospital.

The AY 2012-2013 scholarships for Self-supporting International Students April Application Grantees FY2012
We will accept applications for the AY 2012-13 scholarships (Tsukuba Scholarship, Honors Scholarship and other private scholarships) through university recommendation in April. Interested students should download the application form

i ) Degree students/research students enrolled in and after August, 2011
ii) Degree students who could not apply in July, 2011 because of a leave of absence from school ("kyugaku") at the time of application and returned to school in April ,2012.

ii) Students whose present scholarship (or financial aid) will continue to be provided or who expect to receive a scholarship (s) (or financial aid(s)) in the AY 2012-13

Two professors from Bordeaux
Professors from Bordeaux were invited to secure the safety of Tsukuba for the Leading Graduate Schools Conference meeting in November. Vice President Dousset of the University of Bordeaux II and Professor Voisin of the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (Erasmus Programme) visited Japan on March 14 and 15, 2012.
One purpose of the visit was to gather information about the current situation of Japan to share with people from around the world who consider visiting Tsukuba for the Leading Graduate Schools conference.

Dr.Nicola Festussia
Six months ago, after an exciting competition, Nicola Festussia was selected as the Outstanding Speaker by judges of the Leading Graduate Schools International Conference, 2011. He returned home to Edinburgh, but soon returned to claim a special prize – a week’s visit Tsukuba beginning March 22, 2012.
During this week he presented a seminar, “Functional interactions between Nanog and Esrrb in pluripotent cells” introducing his research at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Stem Cell Research. Discussions with researchers working in Tsukuba further opened opportunities for new directions in research.

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY COURSE 2012
From 14 to 17/2/2012, University of Tsukuba, in cooperation with Institute of Tropical Biology (ITB), organized the annual “Molecular Biology Course 2012” in Ho Chi Minh City. The “Molecular Biology Course” is part of the "Internship Program 2012 in HCMC” for students of University of Tsukuba.
The course included two parts, Experimental Teaching Course and Experimental Research Course. The Experimental Research Course was held at the National Key Laboratory of ITB.
From Vietnam, 22 participants who are currently staffs or students of Institute of Tropical Biology, BioTechnology Center of HCMC, University of Science-VNU HCMC, Hue College of Medicine & Pharmacy, International University-VNU HCMC and Nong Lam University came to attend the course. From Japan, 6 lecturers and 15 PhD students of University of Tsukuba came to teach and help Vietnamese participants in the course.
Lectures about “Molecular Biology”, “Nrf2: a master regulator of antioxidant and detoxification genes”, “Analysis of Gene Expression by RT-PCR”, “Relationship between hypoxia and hypertension” were delivered to participants by lecturers of University of Tsukuba. At the Experimental Research Course, participants had chance to practice “RNA isolation”, “RT-PCR” techniques as well as investigate the effects of electrophiles in foods and chemicals in the environment. In addition to scientific subjects, participants were also trained a soft skill which was “how to give a good presentation”. At the end of the course, groups of participants made presentations to share their experience during the experimental research.
Participants were issued certificate for attending the “Molecular Biology Course 2012” of University of Tsukuba.
Beside students coming for “Molecular Biology Course 2012”, another group of 4 students from University of Tsukuba also came to Ho Chi Minh City to conduct the "Clinical Research Course" at Cho Ray Hospital, under supervision of doctors of the hospital.
Szeged – Second Workshop
January 16-17, 2012, a workshop was conducted between representatives of the University of Tsukuba and representatives of the City University School of Medicine Szeged in Szeged, Hungary.
Topics of discussion included the future cooperation of the two schools and the introduction of the University of Tsukuba’s Ph.D. program in Human Biology.
