2013 Report on Short-term Visiting Program in Taiwan

Ryosuke Shindo: M1, Master's Program in Medical Sciences

Accepting Laboratory: Dr. Li-Ying Sung labratory

Summer School +4 2013

◯ Outcome of the course
During this program, I was accepted at lab of reproductive biotechnology. In that lab, I learned about embryo manipulation, immunostaining and how to use of confocal microscope. We collected fertilized eggs and oocytes from female mice. After that we cultured fertilized eggs in in vivo normal culture condition and activate the oocytes to develop to blastcystes by using CZB medium. After they became blastocysts, we compared the characteristics of them by immunostaining and confocal microscopy. In the second week, I participated in intensive course of biotechnology. I learned a lot of basic but important experimental methods. These knowledges will be useful in my own study for sure. And the end of the program, we made a presentation about results of our experiments.

◯ Experience in a foreign country
I've never been abroad until participating this program, so everything what I saw was very interesting and exciting. Our teaching assistants spared their time to take us to so many fantastic places. I could see a lot of beautiful landscapes and feel Taiwanese cultures. I felt that a lot of Japanese cultures are penetrated in Taipei. For instance, rock'n roll bands, baseball players, animations, and so on. However, my knowledge of Taiwan was too poor, so I came to want to know about Taiwan more. There isn't official diplomatic relations between Japan and Taiwan because of political issue, but we must be able to communicate more and make friends in civilian level.

◯ Content of the Shot-term Visit Program
This program consisted of two parts, first and second week. We were accepted each lab during first week and practiced some experimental techniques. Through the studying in lab, we collected data to prepare for the presentation at the end of this program. In the second week, we participated in intensive course of biotechnology. We lerned many interesting topics related to biotechnology and practiced basic but important experimental methods. And furthermore, we made a presentaition last day which is about results of our study. I felt I have to aquire presentation skills more. To make an attractive presentation, many factors are necessary. My TA always advised me what I should do. All of these advices were so useful for me. I will continue to study not only my reserch but also such comuunication skills.

◯ Influence on your future career
I have begun to think that I want to work in foreign countries since after this program. I think Japanese life environment is stable and comfortable. However I want to try to living and working in foreign countries in my future, even if it is far future. Living in foreign country have great difficulty but I think I'll be able to experience many things that I never experience in Japan. To realize this dream, I will sustain my efforts to study language, science, business and so on, many things.

◯ Other
I could experience uncountable wonderful events in Taiwan. I can't thank our teaching assistants enough. I never forget their hospitality and I will certainly repay an obligation to them someday.
