Atsushi Kawaguchi

Laboratory of Infection Biology

Emerging infectious disease risks, including Avian Influenza and COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Professor Atsushi Kawaguchi serves as a Professor of the Infection Biology Division in the Transborder Medical Research Center (TMRC), and also as a Professor of the Molecular Virology Division in University of Tsukuba’s Faculty of Medicine.

Professor Kawaguchi specializes in Virology and Molecular Biology and is conducting research on host response against virus infection, with particular focus on the adaptation mechanisms of emerging viruses, and the molecular mechanism of viral pathogenesis. He recently identified a novel pathogen sensor system to trigger the inflammatory response in respiratory epithelium.

Professor Kawaguchi graduated from Yokohama National University in 2001. He then entered the Graduate School of Life Science and Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2001, Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences, University of Tsukuba in 2003, and received a Doctorate in Medicine in 2007.

In 2012, after five years of Post-Doctoral research in University of Tsukuba and Kitasato University, Professor Kawaguchi became an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine in University of Tsukuba in 2012. He went on to become an Associate Professor in 2018 and a Professor, in 2020.

Professor Kawaguchi received the Sugiura Award from the Japanese Society for Virology for his research contributions. He brings an important field and element of research to the focuses of biomedical discovery at TMRC.
